Pacific Crop Extension Program

Welcome to our Agricultural Extension Program, where we are striving to bridge the gap between research and practical, on-the-ground farming solutions. This program, guided by the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) at the University of Hawaii, is dedicated to advancing agricultural practices and supporting farmers through education, research, and community engagement.

Pacific Crops Extension

It is exciting to announce that the County of Hawaii and the University of Hawaii at Manoa has partnered together to fulfill a community need of an Extension Agent with the focus on the cultivation of Pacific crops, which hold significant cultural and economic value. These crops are not only integral to the local heritage but also offer unique opportunities for diversification and sustainability in agriculture.

Examples of Pacific Crops:

  1. Taro Cultivation: Taro is a staple crop in many Pacific cultures, and we aim to provide comprehensive support for its cultivation. The extension services will include pest management strategies, and cultivation of agroforestry practices to help farmers optimize taro production and maintain soil health.

  2. Breadfruit: As a versatile and nutritious crop, breadfruit has gained prominence in Hawaii’s agriculture. We are collaborating with the Hawaii Ulu Coop to provide guidance on improving breadfruit yields, managing diseases, and exploring value-added products to enhance market opportunities for farmers.

  3. Perennial Spinaches: Known for their adaptability and nutritional benefits, the program aims at providing guidance on growing these perennial tropical spinaches and ways to consume them.
